What is Poetry

There are as many definitions of poetry as there are poets. Wordsworth defined as “the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings;” Emily Dickinson said, “If I read a book and it makes my body so cold no fire ever can warm me, I know that is poetry;” and Dylan Thomas defined this way: “Poetry is what makes me laugh or cry or yawn, what makes my toenails twinkle, what makes me want to do this or that or nothing.”

Poetry is a lot of things to a lot of people. Homer’s epic,The Oddysey, described the wanderings of the adventurer, Odysseus, and has been called the greatest story ever told. During the English Renaissance, dramatic poets like John Milton, Christopher Marlowe, and of course Shakespeare gave us enough to fill textbooks, lecture halls, and universities. Poems from the romantic period include Goethe’s Faust (1808), Coleridge’s “Kubla Khan” and John Keats’ “Ode on a Grecian Urn.”

jala jo aashiyana mera ab bujane na aaya koi
mere apne hi khade they dur, haatho mein mashal liye.

Juda hone ka andesha juda hone se pehle tha,
Woh mujse intehai khush khafa hone se pehle tha…

Junoon ka daur guzra toh bhool baithe who,
Namaz-e-ishq tha lekin qaza hone se pehle tha…

Main kaise soch sakta tha mujhe woh chorr jaye ga,
Bahaut hi ba’wafa woh bewaffa hone se pehle tha…

Muhabaton ne kaisa kamaal kar dala..”

“Kabhi milain to pouchain gay ik doujay se”

“K kis ko kis k gham ne nidhaal kar dala”

THE SUN OF NEW YEAR HAS ARISE.

IT’S TIME TO LEAVE EVERYTHING BEHIND,
WHICH WE SHALL AND SHOULD NEVER REMIND.

DON’T PUT YOURSELF INTO A MESH,
START EVERYTHING AGAIN AS A FRESH.

IT’S TIME TO ENJOY AND TIME TO PLAY,
TO TACKLE PLAYFULLY PROBLEMS IN OUR WAY.

khud se milen aise hum ki hamesha khud ke saath rahen hum
dil ko tadap-o-bechaini ka na kabhi ghar karen hum

zara sa khamosh ho jayen to dil bhi thhahar jaega
pashemaniyaan na badhao ki dil phir machal jaega

na yun khud se rootho na yun khud ko muljim samjho
